How do the charectors in the game increase their attack and defense?

After studying the game I don't think you can increase them, I think you are stuck with what you pick and that determines which weapons a person can use.
But I might be wrong.

you can increase them by battles. More battles, higher stats. But i will make this easier in my game by training.
